I have a number of PAL sized stills that I’m trying to use in an NTSC video. I have set them to “use project aspect ratio”, and when I view them in the preview window they look correct – no black around the edges.

When I render it out, I get black on the Left & Right edges of the frame. I have tried several settings, but none seems to get rid of these lines. It is as if the program is shrinking the image back so the entire vertical aspect is showing. But, the preview looks correct.

    Any ideas what’s happening?

It’s “match aspect ratio” that you should be using. This is found in the pan/crop window. To save you having to do each one individually, look for a script called MaintainAspect.js
I know it’s on Edward Troxel’s site. Probably a few others as well.

That is what I was using, and I have the script – VERY handy. Prior to changing that, the black is showing top & bottom on the preview window, after the preview appears correct. But when I render, that is when the black shows up on the left & right, even though the preview – at all settings (preview, best, etc) shows correct. I checked teh project settings, and the render settings, and they are also correct. I have not noticed this problem before. Could it be related to release D?

    Not that I’m aware of.
This is very strange behaviour that I’ve personally never experienced and don’t recall reading about others having similar problems. Sorry I can’t be of more help 🙁

Brian, one more thought. Is it possible that the original images have some black on the sides that you haven’t noticed? What happens when you bring one into an app like Photoshop? Are the edges clean? Can you put one up on the net somewhere to take a look at?

No the problem isn’t with the images, I ended up running them through combustion to generate NTSC sized images. I just hope to find another answer, as this will increase the workflow and time.

    OK, now I’m really curious.
What do you consider to be PAL & NTSC sized images?
Vegas doesn’t really care what size they are as it adjusts for them (almost) automatically. I’ve imported thousands of pictures into hundreds of projects over the years and never had any issues whatsoever.
