  • Artefacting on stills in output

Using Sony Vegas Pro 8.0b (Build 217) on a Sony Vaio running a 64-bit system and Windows 7, 4 Gigs of RAM.

I have a 23-minute project in my timeline and I’m rendering it as a 3 Mbps QT file. Output looks great, except…there are a few stills in the timeline, with a little bit of zooming/keyframing going on when they appear, and almost every one of them pixellates for a few frames when it first appears.

At first I thought it was because they were very large pictures (up to 3 or 4 MB), but then one of them is only 38 Kb and it has the same problem.

I tried outputting in different formats (WMV, MP4) but nothing looks as good as the QT.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Pixelation can probably be expected on a 38 kbyte file. I just saved a 1920×1080 photo as a tif (3.8 mbytes) and as a jpeg (1.6 mbytes) with quality level 12. Thus, 38 kbytes is quite small, and can be expected to pixelate. On the other hand, 3-4 mbytes is a bit large. Rather than file size, it would be helpful to know the pixel dimensions and bit depth of the files. I assume that they are rgb. I always try to remember that Vegas is not a still photo editor. I try to give it still images that do not require much processing in Vegas.

Also, I don’t think anyone would see a few frames in a video if it is being viewed at normal speed.

It’s not pixellation for the whole duration of the shot – just a momentary flash of pixellation near the beginning, for less than second, but long enough to be noticeable and distracting.

I understand that 38 Kb is really too small, and I can accept a little pixellation there, but with the other images it’s baffling. When I render to WMV or mp4 it doesn’t do it, only with QuickTime.

The dimensions on all the images are different. Some of them have a bit depth of 8, others 24. It doesn’t seem to matter, though – when the image comes on screen, with a slight zoom in happening, there’s a flash of artefacting/pixellation that makes it look like crap. Then it looks fine again.

As I said, I always preprocess photos in Photoshop so that Vegas does not get involved in resizing, etc. However, if this pixelation only occurs in QT, it sounds like an Apple problem rather than a Vegas problem.
