Not disputing your findings for a second, just wanting to know, how does the Norco chasis enter into the problem. I can see the controller card being at issue, but how so the enclosure?

May 13, 2008 at 9:53 pm[Ricardo Reyes] “We have seen multiple reports with RAID arrays running slow and losing drives with Norco’s solution. We are working toghether with Norco on getting the solution resolved. In the meantime, I have had two customers switch to another chassis (not Norco) and reported no issues.”
Please post back when you have some news, Ricardo. The Norco 12 drive enclosure would be a great value if it’s reliable.

May 13, 2008 at 10:13 pmAt first report we had the customer connect the drives directly to the Areca RAID controller and everything worked. This narrowed the issue down to the backplane.
Now, I just received a call from another customer with the same issue. We mentioned that Norco switch his backplane and everything works flawlessly now. So it seems that some Norco backplanes have signal or other issues.
So if you have this issue, please contact Norco. This is not related to OS or controller because the drivers installed correctly. MRAID GUI is working properly with the controller detecting the missing drives and RAID array the way it’s designed in the event log.

Okay, that’s exactly what I would have expected.
Meanwhile, have you tried the RocketRaid 3500 series cards yet Ricardo?

Wouldn’t that be industrial espionage? I think Ricardo works for Areca.

May 13, 2008 at 10:50 pmYes, I don’t think they would be willing to provide the card to us for comparision test. I think we all know the results will not favor them.
And, No. We have not had a chance to test the Highpoint RocketRAID 3500 series cards.

Funny, but somehow that fact completely escaped me…

but the chassis will have some sort of controller also, if nothing more than to control the through-put to and from each drive, since the Areca card does not connect directly to the drives.
I have 2 of these cards and they perform as well as the Atto card I have does.

Oh! I know that’s true of many of the high-end raid-5 solutions, but didn’t know the Norco had a controler in the box. In fact, I assumed that was why the Norco was so inexpensive.

June 29, 2009 at 1:14 pmI would just like to add that I’ve had 2 Norco DS 1240 and both give me problems, I’m working with the manufacture but their response time is very slow. Both my units are out of warranty, so I’m left to their mercy. I would also like to say that I would read, triple check when looking at DIY solution offered from AMUG, I went with this solution based on their tests and reviews, however I feel that they did not probably review the Norco DS-1240 they should have caught this stability issue. Suffice it to say I will be looking to purchase a better enclosure, wanted to pass the message along, for others hoping to find a solution to this problem.
