  • Area type in After effects

I am stuck on how to get text to fill a custom mask shape like a normal paragraph, without distorting the type (like the area type tool in illustrator). In a recent post the using the path text effect was suggested, but I can only seem to get the type to run around the mask and not inside it. I’m sure it’s absurdly simple – well it should be! Any suggestions?
    Cheers.

Use the type tool. click and drag a type area just as you to in illustrator, then the text will wrap according to the rules you set in the paragraph palette.

I mean using a custom shape (ie a mask or something) but having the type fill the shape rather than normal box shape.

Yeah, but I want it to be editable text in after effects so I can animate using the text animation settings. Can you do this?

No, sorry. You’d have to use separate lines of text (separate layers) that match the layout you want.
