  • Are these still useful? ADVC-100 and JVC Monitor…

Posted by Shane O’brien on September 24, 2010 at 3:07 pm

    Hi there,

I have what is probably a very obvious question.

I have an Canopus ADVC-100 and a JVC TM-H1750C video monitor that I used to use for video monitor about 6 years ago – connected to a Mac.

I’m going to be doing some editing work again in FCP (have a new Mac Pro). The material will be in HD, shot on Sony EX1. I am wondering if these two items above would still be usable for monitoring, or if I should sell them?

Note I won’t be doing any more work on DV, nor will I have a need to digitize old VHS etc. – so the only reason for keeping them is if they were still useful for monitoring.

    Many thanks!

[Shane O'Brien] “Canopus ADVC-100” not for HD.

[Shane O'Brien] “JVC TM-H1750C”you would need video card or box that can downconvert the HD to SD and if the picture was still good it would be fine as an external monitor. I believe every HD card/device offers down conversion. I’m a firm believer in having a CRT monitor in an editing suite. I edit all HD footage and I would not go without mine. I get work fixing and identifying peoples field order problems, without a CRT there is no way of knowing if there is a problem with that. This is also used for proofing my DVDs.

But there is not a big market for SD equipment so if you sell them get ready to give them away.

Those won’t help with monitoring HD material. But, they may be useful to pick up field order issues with interlaced footage.

They are still selling well on ebay, last time I looked. You may be done with converting analog SD sources to DV, but plenty of other people are just getting started, archiving old analog and DV stuff.

I had put both items up for sale… no interest on the monitor, but lots on the converter (so Mark is right). Anyhow, thanks for comments. I will sell the converter and perhaps hold onto the monitor unless I get a decent offer.
