  • Are there any better mpg-2 codecs than Vegas’ Mainconcept?

I’ve been experimenting with exporting uncompressed .avis in Vegas, then encoding them to mpeg-2 using various dedicated programs such as CCE SP2, Sorenson Squeeze, and TMPGEnc. Surprisingly enough, Vegas’ Mainconcept encoder seems to produce the best results, despite using the (generally) same parameters on all encoders (720×480 widescreen, VBR 2-pass, 8.2 max, 6.0 avg bitrate, etc etc). While CCE SP2 has an obscene amount of variables and options to choose from, it always seems to produce a washed out or noisy render.

Am I just lucky with Vegas’ Mainconcept, or unlucky with standalone encoders?

The mainconcept mpg2 codec that comes in Vegas outputs the best pristine quality and integration there is.
