  • Are FCP Crashes Related to Mixing Different Formats?

    Hi, there.

I’m in the middle of a large project and FCP is starting to crash a lot…as in every 30 minutes or so. I’ve trashed the fcp preferences several times. Also we’re not having the problem with other projects, only this particular one.

I’m pretty sure that the problem has something to do with all of the various footages I’ve got going in the same project. I know there will be some head shaking out there as you read this list. Sorry. Lots of people supplying footage, you know? My plan is to use Compressor and get rid of some or all of the variation. My question is, which format do you think is the most suspect, or the one that doesn’t want to play nice with the others?

    Here’s what’s in the project:

    DVCPro HD 1080p30
    DVCPro HD 1080i60
    ProRes 422 HG 1920X1080
    ProRes 422 1920X1080
    ProRes 422 HG 1440X1080

For the sequence settings I’ve been working in DVCProHD 1080p30 because that’s what the majority of the content is in. The 422/1920X1080 clips were converted from Canon 7D footage and the 422/1440X1080 came from HDV footage.

    Thanks in advance, John

    Here’s what I’m running on:
    2 X 2.26 Quad Core Intel
    12 gigs of RAM
    System 10.6.4
    FCP 7.0.3

How big is the project file? I have heard of crashes happening when project files get above 300 megs (from memory).

Might be worth looking at the crash reports to see if there is something common in the crashes like a particular plugin or file. Sometimes people have fixed things by copying the whole timeline into a new sequence.

    Thanks for your response.

The project file is only 59 megs. I’ve downloaded a trial version of FCP Maintenance Pack. The Crash Analyzer suggests that FCP was overloaded. I have some Motion files in the timeline, but not a huge amount.
