I’ve chose to archive P2 files from my Firestore on removable 250gb drives. This allows me to provide individual clients with their own drive(s). Often they want to redo projects and I can reuse footage. I also shoot a lot of long form projects–instructional pieces shot with 2 cameras that end up being 45 minutes to an hour. In October, I’ll have to transfer files in between hour presentations.

What I want to know is how to preview footage in its .mxf format so that I can rename it with more meaningful names–somethat that is more descriptive of the shot. Is there software that will let me do that.

Also, will renaming the .mxf file disrupt any link the video has with any of the other files in the CONTENTS folder? What else should I be cautious of?

FCP 5.1, Twin 2.5 Ghz processors. 1TB SATA RAID. Also MacBook Pro for field work.

    Thanks

For the Mac right now there is software from https://imagineproducts.com/
BUt I think the next version of FCP is going to be able to do some of this.

I would not recommend making any changes at this time to the MXF files. Wait for an update to FCP that handles them more directly.
