Archiving footage to burn later to Bluray or HD DVD…
Hello,
I am wanting to save my HDV edited projects to burn to either Bluray or HD DVD sometime in the future. However, I have been unsuccessful in exporting these from Vegas back to tape in my Canon XH-A1 (rendering them back to M2T files and then exporting to tape). I think the problem lies with the settings on my A1.
Therefore, I am wondering if I can just render my project to 1080i HD WMV (Windows Media Video) and save this to a hard drive. When I eventually have a HD burner I will place these HD WMV clips on my timeline and then render them to bluray/HD DVD format. Will this work without too much loss of quality?

You will lose a tremendous amount of quality if you attempt to archive as WMV and then re-render WMV to AVCHD or MPEG 2 for delivery on a BD.
You could archive as VC1 and store the files that way, then burn the VC1 files straight to BD, although I’ve not tried it. My BD discs have been MPEG 2 or AVCHD on output.Douglas Spotted Eagle

What is VC1? I did not see this under the “render as” menu.

You should be able to leave the files in the HDV file format. They will play if you burn them to an HD dvd disc(or hd dvd formatted standard disc) and you can still use them to edit. So you can watch and archive the same file. They should also play on blue ray but most of the blue ray software out there right now wants to re render… K
