ARC tip – works well and gives great image quality
just thought this might be useful to anyone having to do aspect ratio conversions from 4:3 to 16:9.
In FCP I input the 4:3 footage at 10bit uncompressed, then convert it to 16:9 by using the scale and distort settings in the viewer. Increase the scale to 135 and the distort to 33.33. This gives a reasonable 16:9 output from the 4:3 material.
Next, export the entire sequence (i work on commercials so this is not a problem for me) as a quicktime movie using the same settings as sequence. Open this file in Shake, in the globals, set the format to 16:9 non square, add a fileout node directly to the filein and use a quicktime movie with 10 bit uncompressed codec. Render and reimport into FCP.
The new material will have a much sharper, cleaner image than that given by FCP alone. I guess it just has better algorithms – but i have have tried it on several commercials and it always looks amazing. If you need to arc, give it a try.
