The mid 2010s display tech in the panel just isn’t worth the premium. Until there is a mini led model with lots of dimming zones like the newest MBP and iPad Pro, it’s not worth it. Check out this video for a rundown on the fine details of the products failure to impress: “The Apple Studio Display is a Bad Deal” In the meantime I recommend Dell, I have a DELL U3219Q and it’s great! Almost half the price or less depending on how many accessories one adds to the Studio Display. If you really need colorist level color and have the $3.7k budget their newest mini LED UP3221Q model looks amazing too.
I have two the 27″ 5K LG displays that are *roughly* comparable to the new ASDs – I work in 4K most of the time and I wanted to be able to what I was working on unscaled, so that was a deciding factor for me.
If they died tomorrow, I’d *very likely* order two ASDs to replace them – not because they’re the best monitors available, but close enough, and they will have solid support from Apple should anything go awry.
Your decision process will be different, of course. The main question is, do you need a 5K monitor? There are tonnes of fairly good, inexpensive 4K monitors out there if you don’t need the pixels.
If it maters to you, the LGs (or the Dell Ultrasharps I had before) will never win any awards at how they look.
