  • Apple M1 Max – is clip preview supposed to be this slow? (3fps)

    Hi

I have a fully specced M1 Max Macbook Pro with 64Gb memory. After Effects 22.2.1 (Build 3)

I must have some settings set wrong in After Effects or something… this happens:

Starting a new project with a 1920×1080 25fps comp, imported an Apple Prores 422 mov clip.

I’m showing the preview in QUARTER resolution, press spacebar and the preview is super sluggish, going at approx 3-4 fps instead of 25fps! Full resolution is unthinkable.

Surely the real time playback should be much faster than this? What Preview setting am I missing?

This has been a long running issue for me. I have been using AE for over 20 years now. I used to love it. Now it is an exercise in frustration. See this thread started in 2016!

Have you tried the M1 Native Beta of After Effects? I am hoping Apple forcing Adobe to rewrite their code will fix finally this issue. I haven’t had consistent realtime playback in AE since I got my 2017 iMac Pro. Interestingly my old 2013 iMac (last iMac with a NVIDIA card) plays back in realtime just fine. Unfortunately, it will no longer run the latest OS or AE.

If the Beta runs any better for you, please report back. I am interested in getting a mac Studio. AE (and Element 3d) are what is holding me back.

    Hey guys,

Just jumping in on this as I had the exact same problem as you Tobias.

My MB Pro turned up yesterday and it’s the same specs – safe to say I was pretty gutted with the performance in AE 22.2.1.

But, I download the Beta version of AE (in Creative Cloud, far left panel it says “beta apps”) and it’s so much better – and that’s a pretty big understatement. Definitely recommend giving it a go.

I’ve not tested it with Element 3D yet but plan to do so.
