Exactly. If you don’t have any other options out there for the Avid “elite” why wouldn’t you buy Avid?
If, on the other hand, you have a system with many of the features of an Avid like realtime mixed codecs, more realtime features, and then throw in something like the Final Touch color corrector, you can start attracting the “elite” companies that would never think to look at FCP.
I’m not saying it will ever actually cost $100,000, but I could see a new level of FCP being offered either by NAB or at least by the end of 2007. I’m not saying it’s going to happen, but I could see Apple trying to position FCP in such a way as to go after the high end Avid clientele.

December 5, 2006 at 1:54 amPersonally, I don’t see where doing a high end system makes any business sense for a company like Apple. The number of potential customers for such a system is, frankly, miniscule compared to their overall user base. The amount of revenue that it can generate, relative to the development costs, in my estimation would be extremely low. Apple is a hardware company. The number of new Macs such a system would sell would be in the low thousands, if that much. I’m not saying they won’t do it. I’m saying from a business standpoint, it makes almost no sense. They somewhat succeeded in turning Final Cut into a consumer product in terms of the number of seats they’ve sold, in part by offering a cut down version (Express) at a bargain basement price, and in part by pricing the “pro” version at an equally bargain basement price relative to both its value and the competition. If they did a “high end” product, they would also have to radically change the level of support they offer for high end clients to even think about buying into it.
Once again, I really don’t see where this makes good business sense. But that won’t necessarily stop them.

December 5, 2006 at 3:39 amLooks like Apple bought media management technology. Not sure how that makes FCP any stronger, but it adds an arsenal of managment software to their iTunes and don’t foreget their iTV or whatever that thing is called. also, it looks like there is some goodies in there that will be attractive to news stations…networking and archiving and retrieving clips on the network. Pretty powerful stuff, both for the networked post house or station and for their iLife products. Lots of trickle down there and Apple is pretty good with trickle down.

December 5, 2006 at 4:01 amHere’s an observation. Both Silicon Color and Proximity were in the Apple booth at NAB last year demonstrating their wares. Wanna peek at next year’s direction for FCP? Go to NAB this year and pay attention to who Apple invites into their own booth. Those companies don’t get there by accident. Both Silicon Color and Proximity were featuring the “best in breed” third party solutions for features that FCP currently did not address: high end color correction and media asset management.
I’m very much looking forward to this year’s NAB. If I owned Avid stock, I’d be selling it now!

December 5, 2006 at 5:03 amIf you have AVID money and you are looking at an FCP solution,
the reason you don’t go to FCP is because uprez does not work completely with FCP.
Until it does, people who want seemless offline to online, will not go with FCP.
Put all the color correction or XSan stuff you want to in there, but if it takes you
one hour or one day longer to get the job done with FCP over AVID, and you have the extra
$30,000 grand available, you will go with AVID. HEY, I’m the FCP guy in our shop
and that’s why I can’t get them to go all the way to FCP (me and quite a few others
in the higher end post houses).
