[Devin Crane] “They will probably offer a $100,000 system for $10,000 to draw some of the higher end Avid guys”

Media 100 tried that already. Look what happened.

[Oliver Peters] “I wonder if the people who like to trash Media Manager have actually used it lately? I have and there really aren’t that many issues. If you follow the rules, it works just fine. Avid isn’t foolproof either. Avid->DS isn’t Total Conform.”

I’m one of the few people who actually likes Media Manager. Obviously it sucked when it couldn’t delete unused media from offline clips. And it sucked when multiclip and FCP5 first came out. But now that the bugs are gone, I think it’s great.

With Media 100 it was easy, but you had no options. One shot deal. You couldn’t even go back and reconnect to your original media if you wanted to. And your offline footage just sat there on the HDD so you had to go in and manually find and delete them. Plus Media 100 only worked with the Media 100 codec. FCP uses tons of different codecs giving you more power, but at the cost of a more complicated media management system.

[Rich Rubasch] “Not sure how that makes FCP any stronger”

Well apart from the terrible media management in fcp at the moment…

Not to mention stronger workgroup support. Proximity seems to be one of those “backbone” items that has the potential to really strengthen how FCP manages it’s media. No it won’t add any filters, or whiz bang features, but it could make FCP work better and more efficiently which in turn will give us a much stronger and robust product to work with.

So Proximity could be one of those “turning point” additions that takes FCP to the next level by simply strengthening the way the application works.
