July 10, 2006 at 11:25 pmI’ve been using FCP version 3 for two years and would like to upgrade to v.5. I am currently editing an hour-long documentary and wondered if I might have problems if I upgraded now instead of waiting until I was finished with the current project.

July 10, 2006 at 11:35 pmUpgrading in the middle of a job is a recipe for disaster, doggone it…
You should NEVER upgrade in the middle of a job. The forums here over the years have been filled with one story after another of people that felt the bite of a job gone bad, really bad — like a rabid job without its shots.
Consider this a warning from your pal,

July 11, 2006 at 12:20 amUnless you’re having major stability issues, NEVER upgrade in the middle of a project. Especially moving from 3.0 to 5.1 in the middle of a project. 5.1’s file management is different than any previous version of FCP, so I would definitely not update until you are done.

July 11, 2006 at 12:44 amI guess if your still on FCP3 you are still on an old G4
Maybe you should plan for FCP5 on a new G5 keeping your old system intact
