I just read something on Macrumors.com that Apple will not be including a firewire port on it’s new Intel i-Books and will be going to a single Firewire 800 port, and no 400 port on the Powerbooks.

They are often right…which really makes me wonder WHY WHY WHY?

Forget the firewire drives for now…just for now. But what about ALL those DV cameras out there with firewire connections. And the ONLY way to get video off the camera is via firewire. How are people with the MacIntel computers going to work with those cameras?

I heard they are keeping FW800 to “appease us video professionals” But really, my DSR-11…even the AJ-1200HD…has firewire 400 ports. The AJA I/O has a firewire 400 interface.

How can people claim that firewire is dead? And how can Apple really do without it?

Oh, and what about the MILLIONS of iPods out there? Some have USB connectors, but many, like mine, don’t. unless I buy a cable.

Fw800 is downwards compatible with fw400.
Then we just need fw800-fw400 cable.

Its economics. Think about it, we are talking about the low end of the low end a iBook. If it costs $3 to put the port on the computer that

Why not? They finally get a good installed base of PCI-X products out there and then they drop it cold turkey. Sorry about all those video cards, SCSI cards, Fibre Cards, etc…. y’all purchased. Just throw those out and start over!

We’ll just have to get FW400 to FW800 cables.

    Then buy powerbook or ibook+fw-pccard.
Or will ibooks have even pccard reader?

I doubt the new iBooks will have an expansion card slot, since the current line of iBooks doesn’t have one.

If Apple is saying iBooks are for students and that’s a reason to drop firewire, they’d better stop pushing the iSight as a reason parents should buy their kids a Mac as they send them off to school…being a firewire only camera…

But all Centrino’s do have pc-card slot. Isn’t the new ibook going to be Centrino?
