Apple Compressor
OK, I am new here. I’ve looked through the subjects, but don’t see my answer–or I’m not sure what I’m looking for. I got my mov. out of FCP Studio and dragged it into compressor as per your instructions. That worked and it’s been “cooking” all night. But since I looked earlier when it said 1:11 remaining, it now says 1:19 remaining. That’s been a couple hours. So, what’s going on and what am I doing wrong? Thanks!

What video codec is your original file?
What type of video are you encoding in Compressor?
How long is the video?

OK–so sorry, I’ll try to do better. I exported out of FCP. It is an 87 minute .mov that is saved on my external hard drive. It is an HD movie.
It is saved as a QT movie. I followed your instructions for HD SHow to SD dvd and put that QT movie into compressor. I picked dvd 90 minutes best quality and the audio that goes with it. So, it has been rendering all night and now says 1:25 remaining under the loading bar in history.

You’re being way to cryptic Donna.
How? Exactly how? There are many, many ways to export from FCP, and you need to be very precise on the details telling us exactly how you did it. Keep in mind, we’re not there with you, so you can’t assume we have any idea how you’re doing things.

Precisely what type of HD movie? Open it with QT 7 player, go to Window>>Show Movie Inspector and tell me what the Format says.

Rendering a 90 min. HD clip to SD DVD could take a LONG time depending on the machine used.

Okay, now we’re cookin Donna.
HDV is a very processor intensive codec, as frames do not really exist, they are instead made up, more or less on the fly, digitally via software.
Go to Sequence>>Settings and change the compressor to ProRes 422.
Next, re-render the entire sequence. (Make sure “full” is check in the Sequence>>Render All drop-down menu).
Then, Export>>Quicktime Movie (check self contained, but not recompress all frames).
Now, use that file as your master in Compressor to create any Web video or DVD encode you need. You’ll find that this methodology is vastly superior and mush faster that what you were doing before. Do keep in mind that h.264 web videos take along time when transcoding a 47-min QT file, but not nearly as long as when using native HDV files to do the same thing.

OK–I did just what you said and now I have a movie that is 4:3 instead of 16:9. I’d like to keep the 16:9.

Donna,
There’s nothing I told you to do that would in any way impact 16×9 video to make it 4×3. There’s has got to be something else that you may have done to do that. I have no way of knowing if you have something wrong with your sequence settings, or if the problem is with your Compressor settings. So, we need to start at the beginning and trace down the issue.
Go to Sequence>>Settings and please write back with all of the things you see there.

The 4:3 came out of FC when I changed the settings as you instructed. I didn’t change anything else. I haven’t put anything in compressor yet. I made the changes in FC–was that wrong?
