    Hey y’all

I’m thinking about getting certified as an FCP pro. Is this a worthwhile exercise? Has anyone experienced the certification process as being beneficial to their career?

    Thanks,
    Rick

I’ve never done it because I really don’t see the need personally. What it says to me is you can operate the software according to Apple’s specs. It doesn’t tell me you can actually tell a story and have a proper sense of timing.

Just my own personal opinion. I can teach anyone how to use FCP, but it takes the right kind of person to actually learn how to edit.

cretification can’t hurt, and might give you and your prospective clients a confidence boost … but at the end of the day you’re really only as good as your last job. but if you’ve got nothing else on then why not?

I am not certified myself, but I think it would be valuable, especially if you would like to pick up FCP teaching gigs on the side. I don’t really NEED to do it, but I am thinking of doing it for this very reason.

    Best,

If your having difficulty finding work because of a lack of work experience then It could defenitly be a good thing to have.

If you are self taught, you’ll find that taking the Certification courses will open your eyes to technique that’s more efficient. I’ve taught a lot of folks now and gotta say, even the experienced folks learn a lot.

I think it even has the opposite effect, ie trying too hard to prove something.
Has my builder got his master hammer certificate? No, but I’ve seen what he’s built.
Spend it on mailing out your showreel on DVD instead or a decent webite.

I became certified earlier this year, and while it hasn’t done anything monetary for me (I didn’t expect it would), reading the books and taking the exam did show me a few new tips, techniques and a different thinking process, as well as cement the basics into my thick skull. I would recommend it to anyone who has spent at least a year working in FCP on a regular basis to add to your arsenal of knowledge. Great for your personal improvement.

It’s usually not that “my way” is better, it’s usually more “I didn’t know you could do that, I’ll save time with it that way…”

Peter, you’ve no doubt read the manual… I have. It makes a big difference if you can stay awake while you do it!

What is your chosen career? I think that will have a bearing on whether or not being certified will help your career. More knowledge is usually beneficial in any thing you do, but do you really need it to be sucessful? If you have chosen editing as a career it certainly wouldn’t hurt to study the course. If you have chosen teaching or tech support for FCP systems then it would almost be mandatory to get certified.

Heck yeah, do it. Then do another certification and another. Learn stuff the other guys don’t know. Xsan, Troubleshooting. Digital Onlines. You’ll soon be making more money than all of us. 😉
