I can’t tell if this or the SAN is a better place for a NAS posting, so I’m starting here:

I’ve got a pair of editors doing web vids (nothing at high bitrates/1080i/4k etc) that are looking to move from a stack of drives to shared storage solution. Budget was low (around 2k for hardware) so we are working with a Synology DS813+ with each user getting a dedicated ethernet port running to the second port on the Mac Pro tower, with no router listed in the configs to keep off other traffic.

Individually they get enough bandwidth and it has helped them consolidate a lot of projects into one place.

However, they seem to be losing the file type and creator codes of the project files, which has become a fair bit annoying. They get an error “File Error: Wrong Type.” which seems to trace back to that type of problem (I’ve not yet been over to see it). It’s not 100%, so it seems like it might be a server read error, but its high enough that it seems like the server is the part that is mishandling it. Anyone seen this kind of issue and/or know of a fix?

My next step is to see how they are working- it might be that they need to keep the project files local to the machine and then just copy back at the end of the day, which would be completely doable, but obviously having everything all consolidated would be better just to make sure it all gets backed up regularly.
