Anyone tried the Virtos Audio Restoration?
Posted by Tevya Washburn on December 11, 2006 at 6:50 pmHas anyone used the Virtos Audio Restoration package at: https://virtos-audio.com/index.html ? I’ve tried to contact them a couple times, and I’m not sure if their website’s just got problems or what, but I have received no replies. Mostly I want to know how well the plugins work and how easy they are to use? Also if anyone has used them with Vegas 7? I know they shoudl work with it, but just to be safe.
Thanks,

December 11, 2006 at 7:10 pmI have the Noise Wizard package and although I really haven’t play around much with any of the tools other than the DeNoiser I can say that THAT tool works pretty decently especially for quick down and dirty noise reduction.
I had a wedding ceremony where my 2nd audio system was picking up alot of floor noise (never did before but I might have not set theings the way I normally do) and I needed some of it ofr the edit. The noise ws killing me but it took about 1 minute with the Denoiser an I was back in happyland again. It’s not quite as precise as Sony’s NR but it’s better than others I’ve tried an for the price I don’t think you can go wrong.
As for their email repsonse time, yeas, they are slow but they will get back to you (or at least they did me after about 3 or 4 days) Small company so i guess they just don’t get to it quickly.
IMO it’s a decent progrm for the money and so far at least I’m happy with it.
Your mileage may vary!

December 11, 2006 at 7:16 pmThanks for the info, that’s pretty much all I needed to know. Oh, except one thing, are you using it in Vegas? Just wanting to make sure it works great right in the Vegas timeline?

December 11, 2006 at 8:38 pmI just tried — and purchased — the Denoiser part of this software. Wish I’d had this long ago. You do need SoundForge or one of the other softwares they recommend. Does not work, alas, with Goldwave.

December 11, 2006 at 10:20 pmYep, it works great with Vegas and for goldwave or other apps after you use denoise render to WAV and bring into goldwave or other app.

December 11, 2006 at 10:59 pmDon, when I try to use it in Goldwave, it will not run. That is, as soon as I press “play” with the Denoise filter within GoldWave, I get an error: “Cannot start playback. Either the sound driver does not support the current quality settings or sampling rate of the file or an error occurred in the plug-in.”
But it works just fine within Sound Forge.
You don’t seem to have that problem with GoldWave. Any suggestions?

December 12, 2006 at 5:20 amwhat I have been doing is denoising then rendering as a wav and then bringing it into goldwave. I really haven’t gotten around to trying denoiser directly in goldwave as it has a fairly decent noise reduction but I wanted somethingI could use within Vegas directly.

December 12, 2006 at 5:53 pmGot it, Don. In the past I’ve struggled to make GoldWave’s noise reducer work. Similar idea. But not nearly as well worked out as Denoise. I found it very difficult in GoldWave to get rid of unwanted background noise without wrecking the speaker’s voice. I have a lot more success with Denoise. “Noise Print” seems the way to go for both versions for maximum effectiveness. Note that the “Help” instructions in Denoise are really clear and important to read.

December 12, 2006 at 7:09 pmI bought this recently and it works great. I tried SoundSoap but it tended to distort the sound, especially voices. My problem with DeNoiser Noise Wizard is that the settings for the Noise Print tab don’t seem to be saved when I re-open Vegas. In fact, if I go to this dialog right after setting it, it is reset. If I use the default dialog, Noise Analysis, these settings are saved OK. I sent an email to Virtos a couple of times, but no response. Anyone else have this problem?
Thanks,
-Jim.-Jim.

December 12, 2006 at 7:27 pmYou have to save you settings with a new name (or use an old name if you want to replace what you did before.) In the Preset box, type in your new name, then click on the little floppy disk icon to the right. When you reopen Denoise, go to the tab you used before and bring up the name of your setting.
Note that for some reason, Noise Print defaults to Attack time at 540 while the directions clearly recommend you start with this dial set to Zero; ditto for Release Time. You have to manually swivel then down to zero yourself.
Also be sure to try the slider on the right marked “level”.
All very slick except for some minor defects like attack/release dials.
