  • Anyone doing High-Def gfx in uk? Frame rate question…

Posted by Antony Buonomo on February 27, 2007 at 5:21 pm

Searched the archives and Wiki, but no definitive answer.

The offline editor on the production wants 25fps but AE (7 pro, Mac 10.4.8) only seems to have presets for 24 or 29.97fps. Are either correct for PAL broadcast? These are opening titles and incorporate clips from the series. These clips have been given to me as 25fps. Can I just change the comp’s frame rate to 25 or does this have repercussions?

Also, I take it that it should be rendered progressive?

    Cheers

    A

The simplest way to make a comp to work in would be to drag a clip from the project window down to the make comp icon at the bottom of the project window (this assume AE interpreted your footage properly). Find out from your client what delivery format they want, so you to know what to render it out as.

Thanks, but unfortunately things are a but more complicated.

We signed a contract on providing Standard Def opening titles and that is what I did. However, at the point of almost signing off the project they have ‘reconsidered’ and now want HD. Fine, we’ve re-negotiated and they are paying but I am trying to keep the rebuild time to a minimum. Also, some of the material in the titles is undercover filming and not HD, this shouldn’t be a big problem as it’s heavily treated aand scaled down.

So, the questions remain: Can I go outside AE’s presets and just change the render comp’s frame rate to 25fps? Is this ok for PAL flavoured HD? The test render I did a while back was a Targa sequence at 25fps but that was SD.

Exactly what will work is hard for me to say because I’ve never worked in PAL but, you can make a comp any size, any frame rate you want. If the edit is in 1080 X 1920 @ 25fps then set your comp settings to this.

Maybe instead of really making use of all the extra space in the new (HD) comp you could just extend the bkg elements and leave the SD clips (all the work you’ve done already) in the center of the HD comp. This will keep the SD material from looking like $&@!.

Yes, you can just change your framerate to 25. It’s a weird omission in the presets, but 1080p25 is a perfectly valid standard.
