anybody had a black magic and an avid mojo on the same mac?
Posted by Dan Jacobsen on February 20, 2008 at 12:43 pmhi all,
i’ve got a G5 with after effects on it and have been capturing using decklink 6.6.2 and a multibridge extreme.
i’m also running avid media composer on the same machine this uses a mojo box as an io interface.
if i swap the remote from a digibeta deck to the mojo and boot up a project i get an error message saying the deck is in use by another application and then i can’t get control. any attempt to auto configure the deck from inside avid crashes it.
do i need to disable black magic somehow or something?
cheers

February 21, 2008 at 1:20 amquick set of checks as mojos do this on pc platforms too, I assume you have tried manual from the list? so that implies you don`t have a DVR 500, but a 2000? can you say which deck, and whether this has just started or has been there from start?
The more info the better, it may ring some bells more quickly.

February 21, 2008 at 3:42 amIf you simply put a SECOND internal hard drive in your system and create another boot drive – one for AVID, and one for FCP/Blackmagic, you will have no problems. Running both on the same partion of the same hard drive – you are just begging to suffer (and suffer and suffer). It is common for a MAC to have both FCP and AVID on the same system, as long as you boot up to a DIFFERENT DRIVE (or different partition).

February 21, 2008 at 4:48 pmthanks guys.
the deck is a dvw-a500p. i feel it’s a clash of software rather than the deck though.
i see what you’re saying bob. that’s a good idea. but it seems to work fairly well at moment without capturing.
i mostly need to pull projects off of an isis but i thought it might be handy to be able to capture via avid too.
what kind of suffering do you mean? will i get more crashes and stuff?
cheers

February 21, 2008 at 6:48 pmstill running on guesses, what Bob says is true on the software side, if you have avid and FCP on the same partition, no telling what interactions will occur especially at driver level, let each play in its own sandbox rather than risk it!!!
That is suffering, esp as often it comes and goes, and only when a deadline appears, then it shows.Have you ever had this working or is it a first try?.
If you manually configure the deck from the list do you get the same message? auto config talks the deck first, manual doesn`t.
If you do, then it looks like software issues as above.I have had this and other error messages on crap out from users trying autoconfigure with a mojo IO, (just a mojo and express or newscutter or….. only AVID there) , but a power cycle of the mojo after powering down the computer and a manual deck configure from the list on reboot ususally gets round it.
It doesn`t usually happen with an adrenaline or the older digidesign 2 cream i/o`s (888`s?) or the black protools, unless it is a 2000 deck , and then you have to lie and say it really is a 500 rather than auto.
still don`t have enough info from you to know how relevant what I (sorry, we) are saying is.

February 21, 2008 at 11:17 pmListen Dan – you asked a question, I answered your question. When you write back “I have a Blackmagic card and AVID Media composer with a MOJO on the same system, on the same drive, and I am having this strange problem xyz” – YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN. There is a correct way to do things, and then there is the science project. I wish you luck.

February 23, 2008 at 5:08 amI’ve ben successfully running Avid Mojo+MC and FCP with a Decklink HD Pro on the same machine. I have two accounts for the two softwares.
In your case, have you tried checking your serial port settings inside MC? The serial port on the decklink is available to the system, so its likely that avid is trying to use it? Check your serial port settings and make sure they are set to Keyspan.
If you don’t use a Keyspan for deck control inside Avid, then you need to start using one.

February 25, 2008 at 9:52 amthanks everyone.
thanks neil the engineers mentioned they wanted to use Keyspan and felt they could get the system working. i felt perhaps we might get problems with software clashes so i posted here.
in a way this is a science project. the suite in question is smoke and after effects, and around these jobs i’m looking at ways of getting avid projects into the 2 systems.
as you can probably tell i’m not the engineer who’s setting this system up. i’m the operator and using after effects and smoke.
i’m going to recommend the dual boot method too and see what they say.
thanks for all your help.
