Hey all, im on a G5 mac w/ dual 2.5s or whatever and the stock graphics card…I was psyched about the new openGL support in AE7, and subsequently bummed to find out how its not really functioning properly (ie. its way slower than adaptive res…wayyyy slower).

I’ve been reading that a lot of people are putting the onus on apple and thier OpenGL drivers, and my question is where should I be watching to for news on this? Or who can I/we contact at apple to light a fire under their ass? Or am I totally off base with this whole apple thing and my openGL card just sucks (it was fine for the most part in 6.5)

I’ve noticed a similar problem in AE 7. Open GL seemed to show a much greater speedup in 6.5; now I usually work in adaptive resolution because it’s much better than Open GL in AE 7. I think this a an AE 7 peculiarity, as I’m seeing superb Open GL performance in Cinema 4D on my macs.

As far as the Open GL performance difference between PC’s and Macs, I gather this is mostly an issue of market share. There’s a lot more PC’s out there, so ATI and Nvidia put more effort into optimizing the PC drivers. I’m not sure how OSX on Intel might effect this, but I’d guess that barring major efforts on the part of Apple, this gap will continue unless Apple sees a significant increase in market share.

Maybe some year after they realise they can blend Shake, FCP, and Motion into one unified program like the software for Avid DS and have something really powerful. Sigh. One day.
