Any way to select EVERY OTHER character with a text animator?
Posted by Ze’ev Gilad on September 12, 2014 at 12:25 amLet’s say I want to use a text animator to make EVERY OTHER bigger.
Can this be done with the range selectors?

September 12, 2014 at 12:58 amHA! Well, yes, you can do it “manually” with a separate selector for each character.
But I was hoping for a more ‘automatic’ way that would handle any length of text.
Kinda like a “square wave” selector…
I guess I could just create 50 selectors … maybe with an expression to “add 2” to the offset from the one above … just gets kinda messy. -

September 12, 2014 at 3:11 amThe original post did not mention ‘automatic’. It took me less than a minute to do manually.
I imagine a script could be written to automate the process, or it can be set up once and saved as an animation preset.

September 12, 2014 at 11:18 pmyou can add an expression selector to the animator (from the add menu to the right of the animator) and use an expression like this:
textIndex%2 ? 100 : 0
if the ‘based on’ value is set to characters, every other character should be affected.

September 15, 2014 at 3:43 pmI can’t really take full credit for this one.
I had come accross that expresson in the expressions forum some time ago and made a note of it as an example of how to manipulate the expression selector (which is someting I haven’t had time to fully learn, but i’m getting better….)

September 8, 2016 at 11:29 pmI came across this while looking for something. Sorry to drudge up an old thread, but I just made a tutorial last week that contains how to do this.

The relevant bit is around 3:07. To switch whether it’s alternating characters or lines just change the “Based On setting.” You can download the file at the bottom of the post as well.
