Any thoughts on Samsung Q900 for 8k monitoring?
I am somewhat perplexed, and trying to separate issues to get to the core problem.
Why I cannot see 8k, 7680×4320@60fps???
I been trying to post on the CLUB-3d website’s forum. I had a LOT of trouble creating a loggin on their website to get onto their product forum. It was not just me, I had a friend, Chuck, cs——@v—–.net, who could not established an account, as well.
BUT Here is my situation:I just bought a Xeon Server from Dell.
It came equipped with NVidia RTX Quadro 4000 display card. NVIDIA claims this will generate 8k@60fps through the Display Port 1.4 connector.
I bought the Club-3d CAC-1085 and the Club-3d Ultra High speed HDMI 10k 120hz 2 meter cabling based upon recommendations from several web posters. The CAC-1085 is a Display Port 1.4 adapter that will convert to HDMI 2.1 connector. The Inter-connecting HDMI cable has to pass 48GBS with not a hitch or you’re looking at a black screen. THE gamer 4k community is obsessed with this device, since it can do 4k 120 or 144 or variable G channel frame rates. Club-3d, in a rather jaundice manner, states, oh 8k 60fps is no big deal! The CAC-1085 even shows the NVIDIA RTX Quadro 4000 as one of their tested and approved cards on its box.
All of this expensive hardware is to work on a Samsung Q900 8k monitoring system.
The NVIDIA card will get 4k, 3840×2160@60fps as part of my drop down menu for resolutions.
My desktop for the Xeon machine, shows on the Samsung Q900 but at 4k resolution.
The NVIDIA is using 456.38 firmware. (This is the most recent version available according to NVIDIA).
Now i have been talking with Black Magic Design People about this issue with Samsung Q900. Black Magic has these two devices, the Decklink 8k and Teranex Mini SDI to HDMI 8k converters. They are using an older 8k infrastructure standard called “QUAD 8K” — which is 4 x 4k HDMI 2.0 a/b. The Decklink gives 4x 12G SDI cabling that goes to the Teranex Mini.
Since NOV 2019, I have been asking Black Magic if they would do something about this technological impasse between the Samsung Q900 using SINGLE WIRE HDMI 2.1 and the Teranex mini that does Quad 8k… NOTHING ! *Crickets* Most recent email from them is… we’re still talking about this. I mean, new 8k monitors are showing up with HDMI 2.1 inputs… I am of the opinion the QUAD 8k was a temporary Ad-HOC standard because technology to support 48Gbs on single wire wasn’t economically feasible to market. (Fiber optical… it’s done all the time since 2010… or earlier). They state that their Teranex mini SDI to HMDI 8k is advertised as a 4x4k HDMI 2.0a/b — really? Cause i only see “TERANEX MINI SDI to HMDI 8k” on the front of the box!
Here is one of my BIG concern– The ONE CONNECTION BOX that comes with the Samsung Q900.
In this YouTube video, Vincent Teoh, or u/Vincent_Teoh, Feb 17, 2019, has mentioned the First GEN Q900’s One Connection BOX does NOT Accurately Support HDMI 2.1 He claims Samsung Q950R have a One Connect Box that does support HDMI 2.1 at 8k resolution and 60 fps frame rates. He said this at 3:52 to 4:01 on the Video.

I basically feel if the truth is, Samsung has spent Millions of dollars advertising a LIE on what this monitor can do. They want to hype their “upscaling” technology. I don’t care about seeing 4k or 2k video being up-rez’d to 8k… cause i can generate 8k 60fps video. I need a big screen to do critical QC work at that resolution! Seriously.
When i talked to a local BEST BUY “Expert” on their Samsung Q900, i asked him what would work with the HDMI 2.1 port. He claimed there was none. He claimed there was no need since there was no 8k content available. I told him it was critical that i do find something, cause i am creating 8k content. He did not believe me. (There are 2 different ways to create Real 8k 60 fps footage and content– they both are 3 letters… One Starts with “R” and other starts with “C”. If you have the right computer, you can render 8k video. I have been doing that for YEARS on an Intel i7 Gen 6 cpu system with Nvida GTX 970 card…. Seriously, FOR YEARS NOW!)
I have talked with several Samsung Tech support persons on the phone. Tried to escalate to an engineer, but they refused to deal with me. I have talked with their local repair people…. who wanted to CHARGE me if there were issues that I CAUSED and could not be identified as SAMSUNG created by a Defect or something else that Samsung would be associated with.
Can anyone advise me what can be done to get this resolution and performance.
Sincerely,
Calvin Ogawa.
