  • Any tape-era editors know this deck Sony PVW 2800? Stuck in record mode.

Posted by Keith McManus on December 22, 2025 at 4:47 pm

I am using an old Beta SP deck (Sony PVW 2800) to digitize my wedding tapes from 30 years ago. I am stuck on what seems to be just a simple setting but I fear it may be a problem with the deck. The recorder light is locked on and I can’t get it off.

I’ve tried the obvious switches but the damn thing is stuck in a record-mode like it was set up to be controlled with a RS-422A 9-pin by an edit controlller or something. I know thats not the case because the manual says “If no other VTR is connected, both buttons are disabled.”

I’ve enabled all of the buttons in the system menu (006 set to 2), which shouldn’t matter because there is no other deck or controller present.

The delete button doesn’t work. There are in points and outpoints I did not set (as I just want playback) that are flashing and when I put a tape in it launches like its going to auto edit something. It has it’s own agenda.

I did the obvious selecting the local switch on the front. I did a factory reset of both sets of menus. It just does not want to playback.

Anyone use one of these back in the day? I was never an editor and don’t know all the little tricks this thing can play? Any chance someone knows I’ve overlooked something?

I have a bunch of Beta SP machines including the UVW-1800 and BVW-75, and never had that problem. What happens when you put it into remote mode? If it goes back to normal, then you may have a short somewhere, possibly the control panel. The ribbon cables can wear out from opening and closing the panel. Where are you located?

    Hey Keith,

The PVW-2800 is a lovely machine, a real work-horse back in the day.

First of all, check that the red tap is pressed in on all of your Betacam SP tapes. Then the deck will not be able to record to the tape.
Although, if there is transport problems, you may want to use a tape that has got nothing important on it.

This old thread might help you (always worth doing a search on the COW):

Google A.I. has found this info:

To reset a Sony PVW-2800 Betacam SP deck to factory defaults, <mark jscontroller=”DfH0l” jsuid=”K4iSh_e” data-processed=”true”>press the “MENU” button, then the counter “RESET” button, followed by the “SET” button (located next to the Menu button)</mark>. For a hard reset, try powering off, disconnecting all cables, setting it to local control, and holding STOP + EJECT while powering back on to clear errors and restore front panel priority.

  • <strong jscontroller=”zYmgkd” jsuid=”K4iSh_1s” data-processed=”true”>Hard Reset/Initialization: Power off, unplug for at least 1 minute, and reconnect to clear temporary memory.
  • <strong jscontroller=”zYmgkd” jsuid=”K4iSh_1v” data-processed=”true”>Error/Remote Lockout: If the machine is stuck in remote mode, ensure it is set to “LOCAL” on the front panel and hold the stop and eject buttons simultaneously during power-up.
  • <strong jscontroller=”zYmgkd” jsuid=”K4iSh_1y” data-processed=”true”>Battery Issue: If the unit fails to hold settings, the internal memory battery may be dead.

    Hope that this helps?
