  • Any reasons not to upgrade to CS3 AE?

    Hi Guys

AE 7 had memory issues with MacPro Octos…are there any reasons I wouldn’t want to upgrade to AE CS3 (actually the Production Suite) at this time?

BTW- I’m also an FCP user…

    Thanks in advance…

the only reasons i can think of, is that you will need to find universal binary versions of all your third party effects (some are free, some require and upgrade purchase and some don’t exist yet) and any third party codecs that you use.

but after you track those down, everything will work better and faster, although getting used to color management in ae is seemingly harder than it should be (anyone want to do a tutorial on cs3 color management… anyone…?).

Good Point! I (stupidly) assumed they would still work. I was also going to buy trapcode Particular so I better get the right one! 😎

I haven’t seen too many people complaining about CS3 like they were about AE 7.

cs3 is soo much better on an intel mac than ae7 (or any other version) was, that it’s kind of a no brainer in my opinion. i would just make sure that any third party plugins that you love are available as ub versions, and, definitely make sure that any codecs you need for you workflow are available (or at least look into alternate workflow options).

you may also want to get more ram… cs3 can utilize 2-3gb of ram per core. so if you are working a lot in hd you may want to have around 16mb for your 8-core mac. if you are working mostly in sd, 8gb will probably be fine (i have 4gb in a 4-core, and sd renders rarely exceed 60-70% of my ram).

if you really had to use an effect or codec that was not ub, you can actually run cs3 under rosetta (an option in the get info panel of the ae app) to use those effects/codecs, but you will probably see a lot of the same problems seen with ae7 in rosetta.
