any quick way to add or modify the reel number of a media file?
Posted by Rick Sustek on October 24, 2009 at 5:45 pmWhen a clip exists in FC, it carries a passel of metadata. One of the most important is the “Reel” field, as it gets used in certain places, such as Media Manager operations.
So let’s say I have 100 media files, and associated clips in an FC project. But, the “Reel” field was either not filled in upon capture, or I wish to change it.
Short of going clip-by-clip in the Browser window, and manually editing the “Reel” field for each, does anyone know a way to do this as a batch operation, possibly outside of the FC app itself?
BTW, FC will warn that it will modify the media file when you modify “Reel”. Does anyone know where that data is actually stored in the media file?
Thanks a bunch,
-RickMoo!

October 24, 2009 at 8:00 pmDouble Click the Reel Column next to a clip you want to change.
Change the Reel Number.
Highlight all the other clips that are associated with this Reel.
Right click in the Reel column next to one of those clips.
Choose the correct Reel in the drop down menu.
Repeat for all your Reels / clips.

Sector 15, partition 43.
Really? You need to know this? The EXACT location? why do you need to know that? The fact that it is stored there is really all that you need to know.

October 25, 2009 at 12:54 amone more handy tip:
when you go to do the batch re-name,
right click on the Reel# yo are matching the others to.the reel# you click on will always be the reel# at the top of the list.
handy if you’ve got a few reels in there.

October 25, 2009 at 4:16 amHmm, maybe because if its storage method was known, then I could write a tool that would improve my workflow??? Nah, who’d wanna do that?!

October 25, 2009 at 4:27 amAh, yes! That does the job pretty well!
The important point is that the data value you will want to apply, the new reel number in this case, needs to exist already in at least one clip in the project. Otherwise, it won’t show up in the context menu. Thanks a bunch,

No offense, but the way to improve the workflow is to properly label the Reel numbers during ingest. There’s really no excuse for not doing so.

October 25, 2009 at 12:54 pmno offense, but thats just being silly!
especially in FCP, where it’s so easy to windup with reel “001”
mistakes get made, reel numbers can be entered incorrectly by anyone in the chain
that’s why we have the tools to change them.nick

Which also puts up a big note whenever a new tape has been inserted into a VTR.

October 25, 2009 at 1:17 pmsure, but it’s easy to lose a tape number even after it’s been entered.
if you close and re-open log & transfer, the reel re-sets to 001.
heck, if you open log & transfer after putting the tape in the deck, the reel is set as 001,
and there’s no warning.it’s not just sloppy editors / assistants
tapes can be labbeld wrong.
or maybe you have two people logging rushes at the same time,
and there are identical tape numbers,
so it wouldn’t be caught until later.or you have some media with no reel# and you want to give it one.
lots of reasons.

Yes to all, but he said he wanted to be able to improve his workflow. The one sure way to improve your workflow in terms of the Reels is to ensure they are all numbered correctly in the first place. There are a number of ways to fix the problem after, but the most efficient workflow is to take the time to properly label them in the first place.
This is something I stress over and over to the editors who work for me in our facility.
