  • Any issues working in FCP 6 with a 5.1.4 project?

Posted by Rich Riedel on January 6, 2009 at 7:08 pm

I cut a 720p24 project in FCP 5.1.4, shot on the JVC GYHD100U, was reluctant to update the software while cutting for fear of bugs/glitches/gremlins whatever, the whole changing canoes in mid-stream thing.

Was I being paranoid? I now am planning to cut a project shot on the Red camera, with FCP 6. Once I load the new software into my computer (G4 Powerbook, yes I know it’s a dinosaur but that’s what I’ve got), would I have any problems going back into my earlier 5.1.4 project? The earlier project is getting distribution this year and I’ll probably have to make final tweaks/credits/textless element changes, etc. Will I be able to do all that once I usher in the world of FCP 6?

    Thanks so much

In my experience of working with older projects, I have had no problems at all getting Final Cut to open up projects made in older versions. When you do so, however, a warning box pops up telling you that once you save the file, it will NOT be readable in FCP5. As long as you don’t need to have your project be opened up by FCP5 on another computer, then you should have no problems at all.

    Best of Luck,

    HI Rich.

my experience is that if i open a v514 project into v6, my speed modified shots come out screwy.
if you dont have too many it can be easy enough to fix them.

otherwise, just keep TWO versions of FCP on your system.
to do that copy the app in the finder, and change the name of the copy to FCP 5.14. (or whatever)
the upgrade will only write over the app called “Final Cut Pro”

when you want to open an old 5.14 project you have to open the app first, then Apple O,
or drag the project file onto the app icon in the dock.

Thanks, Nick. That REALLY helps, exactly the sort of thing I was
concerned about/the answers I was looking for.

    Thanks again

The other good thing about upgrading and opening an old version Timeline is that FCP will actually make the copy for you.

I do alot of old to new FCP Files from other editors who only capture footage for the company I work for. We edit and the capture with Older versions of FCP on Site.

So the good thing is your 5.1version file will not be harmed and a copy will be make to work with the 6.0 Version.

“FCP will actually make the copy for you. ”

    ???
    no it doesn’t!
it updates the original file and you cant open it again in FCP5.1, or whatever.

if you want to keep the 5.1 version, then YOU have to make a copy somehow.

    2 ways:

duplicate the file the finder before you open it. append a 5.1 or 6.04 or whatever to the file name

open in FCP, do a SAVE AS and append the version number.

    1st method is safest.

i suspect you know this Ray, but your wording gave the wrong impression.

Thanks again, Nick. And thanks to you too, Ray.

So based on your previous reply, Nick, I went into applications,
made a dupe of the FCP icon, and renamed it FCP 5.1.4.

Then I opened it. From there, I can open all my other FCP projects
that are part of my feature. (I have it broken down into 6 reels to
    keep file sizes manageable.)

I don’t have to rename all the individual reel projects, do I? Just
don’t open them with FCP 6, only access them once I open the application
through the FCP 5.1.4 icon, correct?

    Thanks again, a ton!

    It’s All good… Nick

But really … for some reason my FCP does make a copy. I do not know if it is a setting or what. I have had 6.0 since it’s release date. And it was an upgrade from the previous 5.0. What happens with me it when I open a project made in version 5, it states that the FCP Project was made in another version and if you want to convert it for use on the Version 6. Of course you say yes. Then when I save the project like normal (File > Save) it thinks its a new save and you rename it and save.

So, If my FCP is acting quirky with this … then I am okay with this quirky-ness. If yours doesn’t do it. Sorry to mislead … and yes I then agree you open it then SAVE AS a new name for Version 6 to see.

Take Care and no hard feelings,

    it’s all good, Ray 🙂

maybe there is a permissions issue with your original files? or perhaps they are locked??
    anyway, it’s working for you.
