We are a QC house, but not an edit house, although we do have a FCP system installed on Mac’s with a AJA Kona 3 card.

One of our clients wishes us to do a comparison between these HD Codecs:

    1. DVCROHD 100
    2. ProRes 422 145Mbps
    3. DNxHD 121 Mbps
    4. DNxHD 36Mbps

We can play all out of the Kona SDI ourput except the DNxHD, all we get is a single frame. I know this is a well documented issue, but I was wondering if anyone is aware of any “cost effective” alternatives or solutions to output the DNxHD via SDI that does not involve any conversion.

    Thanks.

That is what my research is seeming to indicate… I was hoping there was some other option…

Well, getting an Avid with MOJO DX really is the only option for this codec. It is an Avid codec. Proprietary.

You have to have an Avid with HD Broadcast monitor next to FCP with similar monitor and to play the footage at the same time. I you don’t have that, there is no way to compare really.

Nope. We have done some tests here with the Avid DNxHD codec and Apple Color and this is what we found too. Playback is fine in the Canvas but no playback to the external monitor.

Avid used to charge several thousand dollars for the card that allowed the Avid Adrenaline to play out DNxHD. Its a bit cheaper now with a Mojo. And remember, Avids themselves do not play out the Quicktime DNxHD codec…Avids use their own flavor of MXF media. The Quicktime codec is only for interchange with other programs. Avid is not a Quicktime based editing system.
