Activity Forums VEGAS Pro another Studio RGB question, sorry

  • another Studio RGB question, sorry

I know this topic has been discussed several times, but I’m finding what appears to be conflicting information in the reference materials and would really appreciate a clarification.

The general area of concern is whether to use the Studio RGB setting in the various scopes in Vegas Pro 10e to monitor shadows and highlights. Both Glenn Chan (https://www.glennchan.info/articles/vegas/v8color/vegas-9-levels.htm) and the Vegas Pro 10 User Manual (page 379) advise making the choice between “Studio RGB” and “Computer RGB” based on the rendering codec.

    • Glenn’s table says that the MainConcept MPEG-2 codec wants Studio RGB turned on.
    • The manual says that the MainConcept DV Studio RGB setting should be turned off (but it does say the Sony DV codec should have Studio RGB set on).
    • My own simple tests suggest that I get better gray levels using Glenn’s advice.

I am further confused by Vegas Pro’s “Render as” dialogs. When choosing the DVD Architect NTSC video stream I can find only one MPEG-2 codec, the MainConcept one. There seems to be no “Sony DV” codec (which is the one recommended by the manual for use with Studio RGB set to “ON”).

In summary, two questions (and I’d appreciate simple explanations, if possible)…

    1. Is the manual wrong in recommending that “Studio RGB” be set off for the MainConcept DV codec?
    2. Where is the “Sony DV” codec mentioned in the manual?

    My environment is:
Vegas Pro 10e (both 32 and 64-bit versions)
    Window 7, 64-bit

    Project settings:
    NTSC DV 720×480, 29.970 fps
Render using the “DVD Architect NTSC video stream” template

    Thanks,

    David Paine
