Another interlaced vs. progressive post…
I searched for a long time because I’m sure this has been discussed, but I just couldn’t find the answer here or even on the Adobe forums. So I apologize if I missed a previous post.
I shot a project in 30P with an XL1s and now I’m editing in PPro2 (I started it with PPro 1.5). When I started the project I used the standard NTSC 29.97 project. The video looks fine, but when I add graphics and put some motion to them (or put motion on a video clip) you really see the interlaced ghosting. I want to have that crisp progressive look. De-selecting frame blend did nothing.
I’m pretty sure you have to set that up when you create the project so I thought I would at least try to create a new project and import this one into it and see what happens. To my surprise I couldn’t set up a 30P project. It doesn’t give me the choice for “no frames (progressive)” in the fields drop down menu under the custom settings tab. So the only solution I saw was a 24P project. The only way that looks halfway decent is to go through and de-select frame blending on each shot. Even then, most of the video looks acceptable, but on shots with smooth motion in them, you can really see that you are missing those 4 frames! Of course, in the 24P project my motion on graphics is progressive, just like I want it.
My question is this:
Is there a way to create a 30P project or am I going to have to settle for either jerky video with 24P or interlaced graphics with 29.97?

When you set up a new project you need to select desktop editing mode and that will let you chose no fields (progressive)29.97 fps.

Thanks for the response! It looks like that gave me the results I wanted, but now I can’t watch my video on my NTSC monitor. On this system I’m sending the video over firewire to my DSR-45 which then goes component out to a TV. When I go into the playback menu in PPro it won’t let me select an external device for playback in a Desktop video project. Any suggestions?
Also, what compressor should I use when setting up a Desktop project?

It’s an either-or situation…
You can’t create a custom setting in desktop mode and get DV project FireWire functionality…
I believe that the CCDs in the XL1 are actually interlaced, so if the footage was recorded on an inherently interlaced camera (I’m not an expert on Canon DV cams) the footage would actually be “PsF” or “progressive segmented frame” The frames may be imaged from one instance in time (as opposed to interlace which images across two instances in time…each 30th of a second frame is actually two 60th of a second fields), but spread across two fields to create what the computer sees as an interlaced file. I would suggest you right-click on your footage and check the properties for field dominance…I’d guess it’s “lower field first”.
You could always finish your project in the interlaced project and export a master clip with “no fields” I suppose…then load it back into a normal DV project to get it back to tape.

I can get firwire to work in that mode. In the project settings I just use firwire out.
For compressor I just use the uncompressed option. I think this compressor choice is for preview rendering only. When you output it you can use Adobia media encoder like any other project you just need to select progressive (no fields). -

Did you get your Firewire out to your monitor to work? I had the same problem at first then I tried again and it worked just fine. I don’t know what happened but it did finally work.

Unfortunately, no. When I got to Project Settings, and then Playback Settings, the only selection for External Device under Realtime Playback and Export is “none.” External Device Audio is also greyed out.

That is strange. I get the options for dv. Try restarting your computer and before you start premiere make sure your camera is turned on through the firwire. Start Premiere and then chose new project and pick desktop editing mode and see what your playback setting options are. Click on the dropdown for external device and there should be some other options.

Now it works! The mistake I was making was trying to change the playback settings AFTER I had created the project. That usually works on a regular DV project, but not with this desktop project. I started over and now I see it on my deck!
