I need to animate a tube (like toothpaste or silicone calk leaving a bead of paste around the inside of a pipe. The tubes tip will rotate around the inside of the pipe leaving “paste” behind.

I need some suggestions on how best to animate this. My first thought is to animate a sweep nurbs using a circle and a spline..grow the spline as the tube moves.

Can anyone think of a better solution? A torus (sliced) might work as well if its possible to animate the slice percentage.

I have the objects models….my pipe and tube.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

Sweep nurbs growth is a great solution. You can use the spline in the details to get an un even flow shape too.

This might seem like a basic question but can I ad to the spine and animate that or do I need all the points on my nurbs spline before I start?

How do you add to a spline? I know there is an add point function but how about a “continue spline function or add to spline?

To animate the spline how do I add keyframes? for what functions?

I am not sure I understand what you mean.
I was refering to the spline control inside the Sweep nurbs itself…make your shape as usual and then Expand the “details” in the Attibute manager and you will see two spline graphs… size and rotation…

I found a fairly good tutorial on how to animate sweep nurbs. I think this helps a lot but I haven’t tried it yet.

Here is a file with a sweep nurbs growing you can have a look and see what I have done… I also included an idea of how you could animate it. I dont have time now to make a real example since I am still slow when it comes to expresso…this should point you in the right direction.
