Posted by Joseph Wilkins on June 13, 2007 at 5:44 pm

Whenever I render out an animations with an alpha channel in after effects then bring it into final cut HD, it gives me wierd artifacts.

I am using the animation codec because I want the best possible quality.

    Any suggestions?

Also as a side question… I just bought a cinema display and have double monitors. I want to perview my timeline full screen on my cinema display, but when I try setting a video preview option, it does not let me … any help appreciated

    Thanks

Sequential Targas or Pict files are an excellent alternative unless you have a huge number of them that can tend to gobble up your available RAM in FCP.

I've been using Animation out of AE for more than ten years and never seen unacceptable artifacts that were really there or could not be traced to user error or a simple misunderstanding of how alpha works. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

NOt only that, you can choose (in FCP) what alpha is being used. AE tends to default to premultiplied, and FCP defaults to straight. So if you rendered premultiplied, change the alpha item properties in FCP to ‘black’ and that should clean it up. You can do this in the browser, but you will have to relay the clip in the timeline for the changes to take effect, you can also do it with the clip in the timeline by control clicking and choosing item properties > alpha > black.
