My next question deals with animating and deforming a portion of a model.

My client sells a pluming plug which you cut the nozzle off to drain it..then you use screwdriver to break the plug (its a breakaway design), it collapses, and you pull it out.

I have modeled the plug which is here if you want to see what I’ve done.

    https://www.pixelspowerandlight.com./plug.c4d.zip

I have modeled the plug as a group of 4 parts.

I need to make the plug pry tab break away as part of my animation.

here is a picture of how the plug collapses and breaks away.

I would like suggestions on which method of animating this I should use. A deformation or an IK chain or something else.

I would also like advice on how to animate “slicing” off the nozzle.

I am not at work so I cannot see the model but slicing off stuff is pretty straight forward with a boole or what i prefer, Animate the alpha gradiant in the texture.

The slice needs to be cut off as a separate piece and shown to be removed. A boole or animated textures simply creates holes or masks things.

Model the nozzle as two pieces make the tip a child of the base so it follows the base but it can be ‘removed’ when desired. As long as you are not trying to animate the base while you are cutting off the tip it should be ok. If you are animating the base at the same time a Constraint Tag (probably Parent mode) would likely be better

Thanks for your help. I’ll try that.

I’m still need of advice on how to setup the plug for animation. What method will work best.

Is there a way to draw and link a spline to an object then animate the spline having the object deform with the changes of the spline?

the spline deformer – uses two splines an original on the surface and a modifying spline you move to deform the object. A crude example – the modifying spline is only rotated it could be better with PLA level control of the spline.

or bones, or just convert to polys and use a soft selection with the move tool.
