An “Andrew Kramer” for FCP?
Posted by Mark Petereit on February 13, 2009 at 10:37 pmI absolutely LOVE Andrew Kramer’s After Effects tutorials. But I use Final Cut Pro.
Most of the FCP tutorials I see are more like video versions of the FCP manual. Andrew focuses instead on cutting edge visuals and zips through any and all AE functions (or even other software) necessary to show you how you can achieve it.
I just have to ask: is there someone out there that does Final Cut Pro tutorials the way Andrew Kramer does AE tutorials?

February 13, 2009 at 11:37 pmIf you’re referring visual effects, Final Cut really isn’t made for that. You can cheat certain things in FCP that you would normally do in After Effects, but they’re just completely different tools. As far as looking at different tools, most third party companies that make plugins for After Effects also make plugins for Final Cut, though they don’t always translate over due to the limitations of each respective program.

And then my new Artbeats one:

But yeah, I know what you mean. How to do the neat stuff in FCP that sets it apart from your typical NLE. Well, I would do more, but not only do I work for a living and have a family who likes to see me (thus the HUGE times in between for the stuff I do), but I am also primarily a story teller, so I don’t do a lot of the really cool funky stuff that FCP can do.
But I agree…we need someone who does to make tutorials and release a tutorial DVD about this stuff. I would buy it.

February 14, 2009 at 6:22 pmMaybe you should be looking into MOTION for more of what ya want? FCP is an NLE where Motion is more along the lines of what you’re looking for I think…There are some DVD’s on that for sure…
Since I’ve not seen the tutorials on the AE stuff, I’m not sure, but seems to me it may be part of the solution you’re after.

February 16, 2009 at 12:30 pmSorry, since I pop between the apps so frequently, I pretty much consider Motion, Soundtrack and Color just extensions of FCP.

February 16, 2009 at 1:08 pmThanks, Shane! I’ve viewed some of your tutorials before and have found them to be quite helpful.
You do a great job of showing how to apply an effect in Final Cut Pro — and that’s what I find in most Final Cut tutorials: how to perform some particular task. The footage used is practically superfluous, as the focus of the tutorial is on the tool and how to use it. Even in the still frame from the tutorial the most prominent element is the FCP interface.
But right under the link to your tutorial is the link to Eran Stern’s tutorial, “Doom Island”. The instant I saw the still frame and the description I said, “it’s gotta be an After Effects tutorial.” Why? Because everything from the still frame to the title to the teaser text says “the project is the focus”
Is this simply because AE has around a bit longer than FC, the AE folks have gotten past their “how do we use this tool” phase and pushed onto the “how do we achieve this look/effect?” Or is it more of a class distinction: left-brain creative folks go Adobe and right-brain process-driven folks go Final Cut Studio?
And please, I’m not flame baiting here. I haven’t been in the industry long enough to start throwing rocks. I’m just genuinely curious and would appreciate the insights from the pros on this board.

“Well basically you’re looking at two completely different tools. Final Cut Pro is a very good editor. After Effects is a very good composition / FX tool.
While you can create a lot of really cool looks and FX with Final Cut Pro, you will never be able to achieve the same quality and quantity of things you can do with AE. Final Cut Pro is just not designed to be an FX / Motion Graphics tool, it’s an editing tool.
It’s the same with Adobe, they have Premeire as a very good editing tool and After Effects as the main motion design tool. You don’t see many tutorials on creating FX in Final Cut Pro because it’s easier and better to do them in a true motion graphics / FX tool like AE, Motion, Shake and so on.
Myself I have created 27 track comps in Final Cut Pro using many masks, composites, color fx and such just because I wanted to see how FCP handled them. In some cases I can do things faster in FCP but for 99% of motion graphics / overlay work, I drop into AE because it’s just better.

February 16, 2009 at 6:45 pmIs Motion just not up to the task? Or is it more a case of folks having already been using AE and just stuck with the app they knew?

It’s more that. Motion has a different workflow and it’s quite a capable motion effects tool, just so many of us already know the AE workflow that it’s hard to work with something like Motion.
I do use Motion mainly for titles and particles.
