Am I really the only one to have had export problems with XDCAM ex footage?
Posted by Roli Rivelino on February 22, 2010 at 8:25 pmI recently finished my first XDCAM EX 1080 25fps project and try as I might I couldn’t export it as a film that played smoothly on all computers. I tried a variety of H.264s/MPEG4 etc. but to no avail.
Every time it would play fine on my machine but no one else’s, I outputted at 1080 and 720 deinterlaced/interlaced every combination I could think of and still the jerky playback.
Please someone tell me it’s not just me, feeling very alone on this one.
Thanks

Roli,
Two things:
First, telling us you tried outputting everything you could think of implies that you didn’t ever try the Compressor presets. Most of the presets are tried and true, designed to create playable delivery videos. I would start with those if I were you, then move on from those by customizing if you need to.
Second, most people in the world are still running computers incapable of playing back HD smoothly at full size without a pretty low bitrate. If the others you’re sending to don’t have Intel machines with good graphics cards they may well not be able to playback video without dropping frames.

February 22, 2010 at 9:56 pmDavid, thanks for shedding some light on this for me, you’re right I didn’t use the presets, but rather tweaked them to try and get a high quality hd finish. I shall use the presets for my HD in future.
Many thanks

Presets are for people that do not understand what’s going on, and if you fallow Apple advice, you may be setting a key-frame every 5 seconds or so.
So, after tweaking how were the setting you used?

February 23, 2010 at 8:43 amHi Rafael,
When I tweaked the H.264 settings I kept getting problems, the main tweak I was doing was changing the size from the default to 1920×1080 or to 1280×720.
I also messed around with the bitrate, sometimes bringing it down to as low as 1000mbps.
I also tried changing the key frames, but after advice from you I left those on auto and just tried adjusting the size and was still getting problems.
The apple HD settings seem to be Apple specific codecs and therefore will only play on a recent mac so those were no good to me.
So it would seem that it’s the size that makes a difference and from now on I guess I’ll output at half the size whether it be 1080 or 720 and that will solve my problems, I’m hoping.
Unless you know of a good codec to use whereby I can give someone a good quality full size version of my HD footage?
many thanks

You are on the money using H.264 BUT… Look at the Apple movie trailers. They’re not full resolution at all and that is because not all computers out there can handle the bandwidth needed to play those videos with low end graphic cards.
If you are using this to pass footage to others for use, then full res it must be. BUT, if you are just trying to give folks or clients videos to view on their computers, you’ll have to downsize your video somewhat.
Go to Apple’s website and look at their trailers. Download a couple, if you can and dissect them using Quicktime to look at their settings. Study what Apple did to make these trailers look awesome. Use the presets in Compressor, too. Play around until you find something that is acceptable to all.

February 23, 2010 at 3:57 pmCool Wayne, it’s nice to know I am barking up the right tree, that’s a good idea with the trailers, is it a particular part of the site, or will I be able to find them easily?
Many thanks
