Alpha Transitions in FCP X
Posted by Gil Mora on January 26, 2012 at 8:48 pmHey there CreativeCow FCPX Community,
This is my first time posting here on CreativeCow, but I did do a quick search before posting. It is possibly worth mentioning, I am fairly new to the editing process, and FCP X is the first editing software that I’ve spent any real time with.
On to my question. I have a couple transitions a friend made that are both made up of 3 files (a clip, an alpha matte, and a wipe matte). My question is… Am I able to setup a custom alpha transition in FCP X, and if so, would someone please be kind enough to explain this process?
Thanks a ton for any direction you may be able to share,
Gil M.
ps. My friend who made the transitions tried to help me, but he works on FCP7. His final offer of help was to link me here. 🙂

January 26, 2012 at 10:31 pmHey there Tom,
Thank you for your post. In my search for the answer to my question, I have found these transitions. I have actually tried and tried to get this particular set of transitions installed, but I cannot for the life of me seem to get them installed correctly. Do I need to install THESE particular 9 transitions in order to get this custom transition I have to work?
If so is there any outward reason my fcpx would not recognize that this set of files are in the movies/motion templates/transitions/ folder?
Thanks again in advance for any input you may be able to provide!

January 26, 2012 at 10:40 pmYou’ll have to ask on Mikey’s web site. I haven’t tried them yet.
All the best,
Tom

January 26, 2012 at 11:41 pmI actually HAVE asked on his site already, and have not received an answer back. It has been long enough that I decided to expand my search (aka my friend with FCP7 experience who originally made these transitions) which led me here. He assured me this was a friendly community. Apparently he has been a member here for quite some time. Tom, thanks for taking the time to help. I probably should have mentioned that I had turned to Google before as well to insure people with first hand experience were responding to my inquiry.
So back to the question at hand.. If anyone who has some level of first hand experience with Alpha Transitions and FCPX that would like to weigh in, it would be appreciated.
Thanks again in advance!

January 27, 2012 at 12:52 amDownload the transition content. Make sure it’s in a folder called Alpha Transition inside the Transition folder.
Download the Apple alpha transition content that’s on Mikey’s page. Import that content into your event.
Apply the transition and drop the Apple files in the appropriate wells. The layout of Mikey’s transition is the same as the FCP7, except for FCPX look.
All the best,
Tom

January 27, 2012 at 7:31 amHey there Tom,
Well, for one reason or another, as I stated before my machine will NOT recognize these Alpha Transitions no matter what I call the folder. Not sure what the issue is here. Not sure about importing Mike’s content into an event either. I tried, but some of the files were not recognized by FCPX?
So yeah… Still having this issue. I may try installing FCPX on another machine and see if I’m able to get the transitions to work on it.
This is a huge issue for me since I am trying to build video that is heavily branded using these transitions. These transitions were built in After Effects, and it seems odd to me that I wouldn’t be able to somehow make them work.
Anyhow Tom thanks for your time. If anyone else has any input or Tom, if you have any more ideas, I am all eyes!
Thanks,
Gil M.

January 27, 2012 at 5:44 pmThank you once again Tom for ultimately helping me get this resolved!!! Apparently, I was trying to install the transitions themselves, but really should have been installing Mikey’s plugin instead. I now have a FCP7 style Alpha Transition available in FCPX!
