alpha channel/masking question
does AE have a similiar tool, or whathaveyou, like photoshop’s mask button.. click it and paint a mask?

you can paint a mask using vector paint. It’s in Effects -> Paint . You can then choose to use the paint as a matte. When animated this can be good for revealing signatures etc etc. There is a tutorial here at the cow somewhere that uses vector paint for rotoscoping.
You could paint a monochrome matte in photoshop, import it to AE and use it as a luma matte.
