Alpha Channel Labels

I’m really confused about alpha channel labels. In AE preferences I have set the option to ask when an unlabelled alpha is encountered. When importing video files with transparency made in AE, it doesn’t ask, and correctly identifies the type of alpha, premultiplied or straight, from the label. However with footage made in Apple programs it often reads the label incorrectly, but does not ask, and corrects it, if I manually ask it to guess in the interpret footage pane.
In trying to work out why this is, I have searched extensively for details of what a labeled alpha is, and can find no reference to how an alpha is labeled or where that information is stored in a file.
Please, can anyone point me to any documentation about alpha channel labels, so I can gain an understanding of how they work?

I imagine it is stored in the meta-data of the file. If Apple files are writing this info in a way AE cannot read, AE won’t know what to use.
I googled and the results suggest you’ll need a 3rd party program to read the meta-data.
