I’m trying to export a quicktime with the alpha channels preserved. My footage is Apple ProRes422 (HQ) in FCP and have done a QT export using the animation codec with millions colours +.

Part of my clip has a graphic that wipes across screen, leaving a black alpha channel that will have content inserted later on. My problem is that this graphic becomes distorted when I export the QT. The wipe stops halfway across and leaves a distorted static image for a few frames.
I have tried playing with the alpha settings of the graphic itself, trying straight and black, neither makes a difference.
    Can anyone help?

Not following you at all, sorry. ProRes 422 doesn’t carry an alpha so where are you getting it and why do you think ProRes is part of your problem?

Hizoner Tim Wilson sez: A codec with an alpha channel. Really? At least that’s how it looks from here. I’ve seen nothing anywhere saying that ProRes does support alpha, and several places that say it doesn’t. That’s okay for an output or archive format, but wouldn’t the lack of an alpha channel torch its usefulness for a whole lot of editing and animation uses?
Although indeed, discarding the alpha channel is a one way to get rid of a quarter of your file size on the spot.
Remarkably enough, only one question in The COW about this so far, and after 5 days, still no answer. So can one of you tell the rest of the class what you’ve found?

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
