My stocking stuffers, both redundent and novel

1 – A capture system that handles time code breaks as seemlessly as my Discreet Edit could do 6 years ago. No endless delays waiting for the system to find the break and re-cue the tape. Just capture and break into seperate clips on a TC break on the fly. Hell, my EMC2 could handle this ten years ago, it is a programming disgrace that FCP can’t handle this better.

2 – A decent titling program. Something as good as Inscriber or Deko on the PC side would be lovely, but merely something as good as Premiere Pro’s tittler is essential.

3 – Media consolidation that doesn’t require degrees in physics, mathematics, and divinity to accomplish. Again, I had better media consolidation ten years ago with the EMC than FCP can provide today.

4 – Video muting that destroys renders is the same as not having video muting. Either make this feature work correctly or get rid of it altogether.

5 – As long as rendering is needed, it should be smart rendering. If something is changed in a rendered sequence, FCP should be able to only re-render those parts which actually need re-rendering. Discreet Edit could do this 4 years ago, no excuse for FCP rendering to be so “stupid.”

[tom meegan] “Ability to add markers while capturing.”

You are too modest. I’d do it like this:

    Dear Apple,

Please take a look at the Log&Capture tool you ship with FCP. It desperately needs an overhaul.

First of all get rid of that pseudo-overlay that pops up when you
capture. It’s a shame. Simply make data entry fields non-editable
like the Name field during capture. They still must be “live” though
    – during batch capture Current, Duration, In, Out et al must reflect
the parameters of the clip being captured. During Capture Now In
should reflect the starting TC and Duration should be calculated on
    the fly.

Add the equivalent of CHAR ON switch found on professional VTR’s to
the Log And Capture window. Overlay incoming video with current TC,
Cueing source material, Capturing… text in BIG BOLD TYPE so it’s
clearly visible when you glance at the screen from across the room.
That’s where an editor or assistant is often happen to be during long
batches. Make “time data” and “time data & status” selectable. Make
“On video”, “On black” and “Separate Window” options.

Allow Markers during capture. This must’ve been there from the
    beginning.
Enable Marker shortcuts during logging. Next Marker, Previous Marker,
Edit Marker, Delete Marker must work in Log and Capture just like in
    the Viewer or Canvas.

Enable editing from Log and Capture to the Timeline. F9, F10 should
insert, overwrite into the sequence current clip in the L&C window as
an offline clip. With modifier (Option?) they should perform edit and
    start capturing media.

Add Eject command. Both button and ejecting after all clips on a tape
    are captured.

[Dave Hardy] “My expectation is that the rumored Final Cut Extreme will appear instead at a professional price of lets say $4995 with a $1000 crossgrade discount for existing FCP users until Dec. 31 2007. After this date it would be a $99 upgrade to FCP Studio 2 (no manuals of course).”

HEHEHEHEHE! I love it! It would be nice BUT I don’t think it will be this easy. Something tells me it will be half price but not for $1000…

I’ve been hovering on the edge of going to FCP from Premiere Pro for some time. I just bought a cheapo $450 upgrade for Final Cut Studio under the upgrade deal Apple was offering.

The main two reasons for changing would be access to other FCP facilities and editors, plus widespread codec support. Premiere’s support for P2, XDCAM and the like is woeful.

But….seeing the things on the list that Apple users want, I already have them and would be loathe to lose them. To pinch a few from the list that PPro already has…

    1. Mixed codecs/resolutions in the same timeline
    2. Saved project includes setup
    3. Subframe audio editing
    4. Direct import of image sequences (with direct update within Photoshop)
    5. Individual track height
    6. Ability to color video and audio tracks on the timeline
    7. A decent titling program

On the other hand, much of what FCP users are asking for, I don’t have on Premiere also.

    Background rendering while editing
Color-correction curves (except in plugins – not sure in PPro)
    Used clip indicator in bins
Create new media with speed changes
Clips with filters have some type of indication on the timeline
Easy way to delete unused rendered media
Turn video tracks off and on without losing renders
    Media consolidation

There’s more but it’s too exhausting. It would seem that no platform is perfect, but I don’t the list of wanted features is unattainable for either Apple or Adobe to achieve in their next product releases.

    Peter, PPRO does already has:
    Used clip indicator in bins
Clips with filters have an indication that a filter has been applied
    Color Correction Curves

If your not sure where they are, ask around on the PPRO forum.

you can do 3, and 5, already
and as for number 7 there is both Livetype and Motion included now and the basic Text generator does a fine job for basic titles

    Peter,

I had all of this with Fast 601 years ago.

    [Alan Lacey] “Peter,

I had all of this with Fast 601 years ago.”

A lot of us had most of the features people have asked for with hardware based systems. Heck we had mixed codecs, realtime Alpha Channel support and realtime Chroma Key with Final Cut Pro three years ago using the Pinnacle CineWave. That card is still the only one that had an on-board processor to enable those realtime effects but most people on these boards complained about how expensive it was so it went away.

Now we’re all waiting for Apple’s hardware to “catch up” to where all of us CineWave users were three years ago.
