All FCS2 Products crash?
Posted by Elliot Pollaro on August 4, 2007 at 9:37 pmI have 2 g5 editing machines intel, just recently they both have been moving really slow and crashing left and right… could a software update caused this? I mean they just start closing for no reason… and it asks me if i would like to reopen… its really frustrating… any solutions?
thanks

August 4, 2007 at 10:29 pmDid you recently load Final Cut Studio 2 over Final Cut Studio(1)?
If so, has it worked for you until now?
I hear that there are problems loading one version on top of another??

Nothing other than fix what’s broken. Unix, the code underlying the MAC OS can get wacky from time to time, and repairing permissions from time to time straightens out that wackiness.

there is no such thing. G5’s are PowerPC machines. Mac Pro’s are Intel. Are these G5’s or Mac Pro’s?
As David Weiss said, Repair Disk Permissions first and foremost on the Mac Harddrive. This takes approx. 2 minutes and checks for any errors on your startup disc. This will have zero effect on any current projects as far as damaging them in any way.

August 5, 2007 at 4:02 amIf you want FC works fine, first make sure that your system is optimiced.
There is a serie of maintenance routines that the Macs do by them self when they are not switch-off at night. If you switch-off your Mac every night you must run those routines by your self. Look for a little application call “Maintenance”. You can download it free in the Apple web-site.
One of those tasks is “Repair permissions”. This is something that you must do to your System drive whenever you install something. With the Disk Utility.
Appart of that there are two application, Diskwarrior and Techtools, to keep the directories of your HDs clean. I can not understand how is possible to work with MacOX without using one of those applications.
Another think that helps your FC working properly is to have the the HDs that you use for editing (not the System driver) Un-journaled.
I’m not the only one who thinks that the 75% of the crashes, hung and problems of FC come from a poor maintenance of the system.

It takes about two minutes. And, do you think I would actually tell you to do something that would mess up your save projects? Come on, do you really?
