  • Alexa: make my own LUTs, DIT on the cheap?

I’ll be shooting a music video soon on the Alexa, which I will be directing and editing (FCP). First time with the camera, though my DP has shot with it before. They’re asking about a DIT but I don’t know if we can afford one on this shoot. The primary concern is that we won’t be able to monitor accurately without viewing the footage with a LUT applied. Was wondering if I made my own color correction on a sample image then exported a LUT file (suing Magic Bullet’s new LUT Buddy plugin), could I apply that LUT to our client monitor? If so, what gear would I need – a monitor that can accept a USB stick with the LUT on it or is there a “LUT Box” that could be chained into a regular preview monitor?

    TIA,

    JVK

The Alexa will give you the option to run a line out directly to the monitor with a REC 709 look already applied. This way they can see what is being shot, with a look already applied.
