  • AJA Kona LHi + CS6 + Anamorphic SD material = letterboxing

Posted by Tapio Haaja on June 7, 2012 at 4:17 pm

    Hi,

I just started testing AJA Kona LHi with Premiere Pro CS6 and it seems to be light years ahead of CS5.5. Great! But… We’ve plenty of material as anamorphic SD and problem is that AJA Kona LHi video output always letterboxes anamorphic picture when monitoring. So it assumes we’re using 4:3 video monitors and letterboxes anamorphic material. Is there way to change this behavior so I can tell that out video monitors are 16:9 and I don’t want that AJA letterboxes my material?

    Tapio,

Did you check in AJA’s control panel and make sure that you don’t have it set for 4:3 video to output letterboxed? See image below to see the option for the SD conversion

    Hope this helps.

Yes, I had checked. It doesn’t make any difference. Currently there’s no way to monitor anamorphic SD through Kona in Premiere Pro CS6 without video getting letterboxed. For me it seems there should be an option to choose 576i anamorphic as your resolution in AJA preferences inside Premiere Pro. Now only option is 576i and it assumes you have 4:3 video monitor. In our broadcast workflow about 90% of our material is anamorphic SD so Premiere + Kona is pretty much useless for us until this is fixed. So I really hope this will be fixed soon.

    Tapio,

What are you trying to output to? Tape or just streaming it out somewhere?

    Tapio,

If you are outputting to tape, since you are in a broadcast workflow, you may want to check the settings on your deck. I know a lot of times, our Sony DigiBeta or IMX decks will take the signal from the Kona card, but we can have the conversion be changed, causing it to switch to anamorphic, letterboxed, or center-cut. So, again, if you are going to tape, check your deck settings. If the Kona card is set correctly, as well as your settings in Premiere, then it would be the deck.

Same problem here – now we are forced to use Final Cut to output to Digibeta (16:9 anamorphic) – only way to see anamorphic video is to switch SD to SD to V crop – but this only stretch image – filed interlace problems are seen on moving parts.
Hope it will be soon updated and corrected.

Hi Matjaz! Nice to hear others are having same problem. I think we should give loud feedback to AJA so it’ll be soon fixed.

AJA has great customer service. Contact them directly. They usually either have a solution or do actually take action to try to rectify it.

Yes they seem to have great customer support! They confirmed my findings and said this will be probably fixed in next driver update 🙂 I really hope so.
