  • AJA Kona LH DV Playback – Distorted + Digital Noise

Posted by Ben Cheng on August 4, 2006 at 10:10 am

    Hi All,

I’m experiencing a strange issue with the playback of DV media, captured from BetaSP, via Kona LHe YUV Input.

    System Config:
    PM G5 Quad 2.5Ghz
    4GB RAM
    ATTO UL5D
    AJA Kona LHe + KL-Box

    Mac OS X 10.4.6
    QuickTime 7.1.1
    ATTO 3.6.0
    FCP 5.1.1

    Actions so far & Observations:
    – Playback of DV media in FCP, through both SDI + Analog Out, has digital noise & some parts are distorted
    – Swap KL-Box with the Breakout Cable, the issue is still there
    – Trashed FCP + Kona Pref Files, the issue is still there
    – The customer will test playback of DV media in AJA VTR Exchange & see if this happen outside FCP too

    Cheers,

Definitely don’t see any issues of this sort here with our Kona 2 and Kona 3 systems. Either capturing a source as DV or simply playing back DV material through the Konas.

What is the quality of the original Beta material?

Do you have a black burst generator?

I haven’t seen noise, but this week I noticed distortion in the picture after an up-rez recapture: Offline DV –> DVCPRO50 via LH.

For some reason some of the clips had the wrong aspect. After looking at the Motion tab, all I did was reset the aspect to 0 under the distortion option.

Other than that, captures and playback have been fine. As suggested, try trashing some preferences, maybe uninstall/reinstall Kona drivers.

    Good Luck

the Kona LH does not do upconvert – you had to have done this is software which is why the aspect was off.

Correct sir, this was a recapture. I took the clips offline and recap’d with the DV50 codec. This is when some of the clips were distorted.

Might have something to do with the timeline and less to do with AJA hardware.

    Hi All,

    Thanks for all the replies.
This Kona LH has a PAL black burst reference input.
I’m going to trash the Kona pref files to see if its make a difference, as adviced by Kona Support.

    Cheers,
    Ben
