Is anyone having success with the AJA io and the Tascam FW-1884 in Final Cut Pro? It seems that I have a fight going on between these two in some kind of Firewire conflict.

In Soundtrack Pro and in the G5 preferences I can set up the FW-1884 as the default audio device. Works great with Soundtrack, and I used to to record a few VO’s in STP today.

The problem is when I switch over to Final Cut Pro (v5). FCP becomes sluggish, I get the dreaded “can not open io device…blah blah blah”. I have had it work for a while after a complete reboot, only to crash after a few edits.

When I unplug the firewire cable from the FW-1884 things are OK. The AJA and FCP are fine, audio flows out of the AJA thru the Tascam and into my audio monitors.

you can’t have two Firewire A/V Input devices connected at the same time with FCP. It’s an either / or situation.

Oh yeah… I forgot about that.

Will adding a new firewire card to the G5 allow me to do that, or does this require a move to a Kona card? Of course just unplugging the audio board firewire cable when I’m in FCP is a simple work-around.

    Thanks for the reminder Walter!

I have the 1884 with a Kona 2 card, and an IO. The IO is just acting like a conversion device, and not actually streaming video though it via firewire.

I use the EAS out of my Kona card into the IO then ADAT out of the IO into the 1884 for conversion to analog for monitoring.

WHy not try taking ADAT out of the IO and letting the 1884 do the D/A? that may free up the bandwidth for the IO to function correcty with just a small amount of midi data going to the MC via FW.

I don’t know what you would classify as “A/V Input devices” but I have a Tascam FW-1084 and Sony GV-D1000 (and HD) all running on the same firewire bus with almost no problems. Almost as in if I don’t follow correct procedures, then the firewire bus locks and I have to restart the devices.

those two devices aren’t working at the same time, like an IO is working while using an AJA IO setting to edit in FCP. Your FW deck isn’t alive while editing…the two FW streams aren’t competing. At least I think that’s your answer.

That’s the setup that I’ll be using with my 1082. I talked to AJA, and they suggested possibly getting a FW switch to simply switch the cable over to the control surface when not doing any input/output with the IO…since you’ll most likely be editing with the Kona 2. This ends any conflict between the IO and your Tascam.
