Hi Lynne,
You will get some bennefit from a capture card (Kona, BM,..) as long as you capture with a better codec than DV. If you capture DV the only bennefit from the card will be that you can adjust the Video levels before digitalization, but this may be done with the desk you are using to play your analoge footage (as long as it have a TBC). If you capture in DV will be not much difference if you do it through a capture card or passing-through the camera. I you capture in DV50 them to spend some money in a capture card will be worth.
