  • Aja IO and the Panic AJ93 deck – Out of sync again

fcp 5.1.4 and Weibetech FW800 drive.

Ok, I had a similar problem with this deck via firewire, so we now only use it with the AjaIO, however now there is about a 4fr offset, and unlike the firewire issue where it drifted, this is a pretty steady looking offset.

In playback on the fcp I see inconsistent audio sync between tapes. Flakey enough to think I am seeing things. Occaionally some tape captures look very close to in sync (+ or – 1 or 2 fr.), and other times they appear way out, like 4+ frames. All is coming in from DvcPro-50, and aja is doing a lowres jpeg 320×240 capture.

The AjaIO has a prebuilt -2 offset in its fcp device preset, and the playback tab in the aja device preset also has a +5 playback offset, what is that for.. external monitor sync.. I presume ?

Anyway, what have others’ used in the aja device preset. Is having the aja plugged into the front FW400 make a difference from the back one.

As well, there is no external monitor in use.

    thanks

The preset for the io is 5 frames, and you should separate the io from your firewire drive with a PCI card such as this:

The front and back ports are the same bus.

Thanks Jeremy, yes our FW800 drives are running on their own card, as the one you linked to.

and there are two places for offset at the bottom of the IO Preset page. One is -2, the other is playback 5fr. I presume you suggest that the preset is correct.

I was wondering should we take audio to a different drive, with this heavy off line compression going on. We are using a G5, dual 2g, pre-intel.

I am not sure. I have never used offline photojpeg. If you use another codec (such as dv) does everything stay in sync?

The offset I am talking about for the io is 5 frames and it’s under Final Cut Pro > System Settings > Playback Control Tab. There’s a frame offset field and that should be changed to 5 frames when using the io for playback.

Ok, I’ll play around with the aja for playback, so far this has all been within fc, seeing the offset. It is like -4 frames off in playback…. to FC monitor.

I captured a test of countdown slate in pro50 and photo jpeg, and tried slipping the capture offset in Aja device preset and the playback offset, several frames ea. direction, nother ever changed, playing back frame by frame on the countdown slate, beep was exactly the same in all instances, so this offset tab in the device preset seems not to make a difference..

and the good news there, sort of, is that the capture was always correct, but then why does lip sync look off…

I am trying using a different computer now.. still same…
    arrrghh..

    Holly COW, Jeremy….

The Sys/pref – Playback offset was set to 4….

Putting it to “0” seems to fix it…

SO, that is a preset for adjusting the playback to go to an external monitor then….via AJA for example.

I wonder when or how that got changed…

It’s to sync your canvas with an external monitor, yes.

Glad you are up and running.
