AJA Express lo can’t pass captions via SDI ?
I was just told that the AJA Express lo can’t pass the closed captions now produced on the timeline of AVID MC 5.5 via SDI to an HD deck. Is it possible that this is correct ? This was one of the most brilliant new features of AVID MC 5.5. A real HD caption format.
Who was responsible for this monumental oversight? Or was it just AVID marketing?

Well there it is, fourth from the bottom on an AVID page I have never seen before. Captions are NOT SUPPORTED. For those of us trying to produce HD programming for broadcast, captions are not “ancillary,” They are required. So much for the new open AVID that is actually listening to their users.

They ARE listening. They are just going slow…baby steps. Before last year, you needed to spend at least $8000 to get MONITORING out of an Avid to an HDTV or broadcast monitor…then they opened it up to the MXO2 mini. But that didn’t capture from nor output to tape. People wanted to capture and output using third party hardware. BAM…this year they announce support for the AJA IO Express…that allows capture and output from tape.
I’m sure more options will follow. Avid is just taking it slowly. Avid was never known to rush things.

I have not heard from AJA, but I will be one very disappointed owner of 3 AVIDS if I learn that this was a designed in difference to protect over priced AVID I/O options.
